Project to complete the first white roof model block will help to reduce energy costs and promote environmental sustainability throughout the City
July 18, 2012 New York, NY – As part of an initiative to curb climate change, reduce stress on our city’s power grid and save residents money, White Roof Project, FAB and La MaMa Theatre are working together to give the theatre’s roof a shiny coat of 90% solar-reflective coating. The project will help complete the first ever NYC white roof model block and is sponsored by Allied Building Products and Great White Coatings.
Wednesday’s painting team is expected to face searing temperatures of 99 degrees. This week is just one in a string of heat waves pounding NYC and other major U.S. cities. Bloomberg news reported that temperatures in NYC have already reached 90 degrees 12 times since June 1st, with the annual average being only 14 days over 90 degrees. High heat means increased energy demand, stressing the city’s strained power grid and forcing ConEdison to cut voltage throughout the city. “We are excited to continue working with White Roof Project to lead this aggressive push to reduce heat in our community. It’s a little known problem with huge consequences that has a very simple, implementable solution”, said FABnyc Executive Director Tamara Greenfield.
This summer, White Roof Project will begin to study the impact of white roofing on block energy consumption. Local groups are excited to be part of the movement to make their block more livable, lower their energy bills and be part of the city’s sustainable future. La Mama staffer Spencer Edwards, who has helped to coat the roof stated, “we are happy to work with the White Roof Project to conserve energy. All of us at La MaMa are committed to our Lower East Side neighbors and community and are proud to be part of this effort.”
