Coating A Roof (Quickly) with Operating Engineers Local 94

White Roof Project was proud to spend a fine September day coating another rooftop with International Union of Operating Engineers Local 94. This year, we were up in Harlem, where we are working to begin our second model block project with the help of Lott Community Development Corporation.

White Roof Project works to mitigate the Urban Heat Island effect – the super heating of cities in the summer due to a proliferation of dark surfaces like roofs and roads.

This summer I had the amazing opportunity of working as the Social Media Intern  for the White Roof Project.  When I came across WRP’s posting for this internship on idealist.com and looked at their website, I was so excited and desperately wanted to do it.I am a rising Senior at Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, with a major in political science and a minor in women’s studies and since high school, I have been a strong supporter of sustainability and protecting the environment.

Baltimore is Taking Climate Action

On November 29th, 2012, Baltimore launched its Climate Action Plan. Baltimore CAP was born with the goal of reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and making the city more attractive for existing and future residents, visitors, and employers. This way, the Charm City followed in the footsteps of other cities, like New York, Chicago or Washington DC, who had previously undertaken efforts to address sustainability measures and face the challenges of Climate Change.

Welcome Spring, Welcome Our New Executive Director

Today is always an exciting day, but spring is especially exciting this year because the change of seasons also welcomes our new Executive Director Rachel Laiserin.

Rachel has extensive administrative experience working for New York City government agencies including the Department of Design and Construction, Housing Preservation and Development, and the Department of Information Technology and Telecommunications. She has expertise in the areas of budgeting, project management, and intergovernmental affairs.

Thinking about Climate Change on the First Day of Spring

Lynn Meyer is new to the White Roof Project team, and she has a passion for curbing climate change. Earlier this year, she participated in the Forward on Climate rally on the Washington Mall. The temperature was freezing, but the 40,000 attendees generated lots of energy. Speakers included Van Jones of Rebuild the Dream, White Roof Project partners 350.org, and the Sierra Club. They continued making the connection between devastating storms like Sandy and climate change.
